Aftercare Instructions

Tattoo aftercare is crucial for ensuring your new ink heals properly. For first-timers, it can be overwhelming due to the many conflicting opinions on the best practices. Always follow your artist’s specific aftercare instructions, as they have a preferred method for your skin.

Below are the two aftercare methods used by Allsvart artists: Derm Shield and non-Derm Shield instructions. Your artist should have guided you through these options after your session, so refer to the appropriate set of instructions below.

    Instructions:

    • Keep the bandage on for at least 5 hours, preferably overnight. The next morning, wash your hands, remove the bandage, and clean the tattoo with cool, soapy water using unscented, dye-free antibacterial soap (like Dial Gold).

    • Gently pat the area dry with a clean paper towel - do not rub.

    • Apply a thin layer of Aquaphor spray regularly to keep the tattoo moist for the first four days. Wash your hands and the tattoo area before each application.

    • Do not re-bandage; your tattoo needs to breathe. Protect it from bacteria and direct sunlight by covering it with clean, loose 100% cotton clothing.

    • After four days, switch to an unscented lotion (like Lubriderm Daily Moisture). Avoid petroleum jelly.

    • Quick lukewarm showers are fine, but no baths. Clean your tattoo separately with antibacterial soap—no shower gel or shampoo. Avoid pools, jacuzzis, and gym activities for two weeks.

    • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours after your session.

    • Your tattoo may peel; this is normal. Continue to moisturize with a hypoallergenic, fragrance-free lotion until fully healed. We recommend Lubriderm moisturizing lotion linked above

    • Once healed, use a sunscreen with at least 40 SPF.

    Removal Instructions:

    • Leave the Derm Shield on your skin for 5 days.

    • Quick lukewarm showers are fine, but no baths. Clean your tattoo separately with antibacterial soap—no shower gel or shampoo. Avoid pools, jacuzzis, and gym activities for two weeks.

    • On the 6th day, remove it in the shower by peeling up one of the top corners, then allow water to flow over the area while pulling the Derm Shield straight up.

    • Do NOT pull the Derm Shield away from the body or downwards.

    • If the Derm Shield was on for 5 days, DO NOT reapply.

    • If the Derm Shield was on for less than 5 days, Please follow the instructions below on how to re-apply

If you need to re-apply Derm Shield:

    • Clean the tattoo and surrounding skin with mild antibacterial soap and water, then pat dry with a clean paper towel.

    • Cut the Derm Shield to cover the tattoo area, extending 1-2 inches beyond its edges.

    • Peel off the backing and apply the adhesive side over the tattoo, starting from the center and pressing outward to avoid air bubbles. Do not stretch the shield during application.

    • After 5 days, remove the second application. Clean the tattoo and surrounding skin again with mild antibacterial soap and water, then pat dry.

Moisturize with a hypoallergenic, fragrance-free lotion until fully healed. We recommend Lubriderm moisturizing lotion linked above.
