Pre-tattoo Session Guide: What to Do Before Your Tattoo Appointment
You know that feeling when you've finally decided? That mix of pure excitement and maybe just a tiny flutter of nerves in your stomach? You've been scrolling through Instagram for months, saving tattoo inspiration, and now you're ready to take the plunge.
We had this client who came in buzzing with excitement but admitted she'd barely slept the night before. She'd researched artists, found the perfect design, even cleared her weekend for healing. But she hadn't prepared her body for what was about to happen - and it showed.
Here's what most people don't realize: a beautiful tattoo experience starts way before the needle touches your skin. You wouldn't run a marathon without training, right? When you prepare properly, you're giving your artist the best possible canvas to work with. That means better results, more comfort during your session, and faster healing afterward.
At Allsvart, we've learned that clients who have the most amazing experiences understand that getting tattooed is a partnership. We care about your entire journey, from that first spark of an idea to the moment you see your healed masterpiece.
Tattoo Precare Instructions
Think about it this way - when you prepare your body for a tattoo, you're not just following rules. You're showing respect for the art that's about to become part of you forever. Every artist at Allsvart has seen the difference between a client who shows up prepared versus one who doesn't, and trust us, it's night and day.
Proper preparation isn't just about making things easier (though it definitely does that). It's about getting the absolute best results possible. When your skin is hydrated and healthy, the ink settles better. When you're well-rested and fed, you can sit longer without discomfort, which means your artist can work without rushing. When you're relaxed and prepared, the whole experience transforms from something you endure into something you actually enjoy.
This is insider knowledge straight from artists who genuinely care about their clients and their craft. We want you walking out of here not just with an amazing tattoo, but with an amazing memory of how it felt to get it.
Essential Pre-Tattoo Session Guide
Whether this is your first tattoo or your newest addition, this pre-tattoo session guide can make all the difference in your experience. These guidelines will help make your session as comfortable and successful as possible.
Hydration and Skin Preparation Before Your Tattoo Session
Be hydrated to make your skin more resilient, allowing it to endure longer tattoo sessions and heal faster afterward. Start drinking extra water at least a week before your appointment - think of it as priming your canvas for the best possible results.
Moisturize the area twice daily for the two weeks leading up to your session. We recommend unscented Lubriderm daily moisturizing lotion, which you'll also use during the healing process. However, please do not apply any lotions or creams on the day of your appointment, as this can interfere with stencil transfer and proper sterilization.
Rest and Recovery Preparation
Get a good night's sleep before your appointment. Head to bed early and avoid consuming alcohol or drugs the night before. When you're well-rested, your body handles the tattooing process better, your pain tolerance increases, and you'll be mentally prepared for what can be a lengthy session.
Nutrition and Energy Management
Eat a substantial, healthy meal before your session. It's not uncommon for people to lose their appetite from nerves, but low blood sugar can lead to dizziness, nausea, or fainting in the chair. For longer sessions, bring light snacks to replenish energy - remember, you'll get breaks throughout the day so both you and your artist can rest and refuel.
Health and Safety Considerations
If you're feeling unwell or have sustained any injury leading up to your appointment, contact us immediately. Your artist may recommend rescheduling to give your body time to heal before getting tattooed. This isn't just about your comfort - it's about getting the best possible results and avoiding complications.
What Not to Do Before Your Tattoo Session
Tattoos won't heal well on freshly damaged skin, so anything that causes damage must be avoided. This includes getting a tan, fake tan, sunburn, chemical peel, or any cuts or scrapes on the area.
Weight lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided at least two days before your session. Putting strain on your muscles can cause swelling and soreness which may make the tattoo more uncomfortable and impact healing time. It can also cause your skin to stretch slightly, which could distort your tattoo when your skin returns to normal.
Day-of-Session Guidelines
-
Arrive on time for your appointment. Unless otherwise communicated by your artist, sessions typically start at 11am. Don't schedule commitments immediately after your session - many factors can cause a session to run longer than expected, and you don't want your artist to feel rushed.
-
Shave the area the morning of your session before arriving at the shop (unless you're unable to reach the area). While we have disposable razors on site, using warm water and shaving gel at home reduces the possibility of ingrown hairs and skin irritation.
-
Dress comfortably and appropriately for a potentially long session. Avoid tight, constricting clothing and consider where you'll be getting tattooed to make sure your clothing leaves the area easily accessible.
-
While some shops allow guests, it's generally better to come alone. Onlookers can get bored and may get in your artist's way. If you must bring someone, they'll need to stay in the designated waiting area unless invited chair-side by your artist. Children and infants are generally not permitted as they can cause distractions, equipment damage, or interrupt the artists at work.
-
Bring non-intrusive entertainment that won't disrupt your artist - an mp3 player, tablet, or laptop for passive entertainment works great. Movies, music, and TV are fine, but anything requiring motion like video games isn't permitted.
Stay sober - never use drugs or alcohol before or after your session, as they can lead to complications and jeopardize your safety and tattoo quality. However, over-the-counter pain relievers during your session are acceptable for pain management.
During Your Tattoo Session
Hands-Off Policy
Never touch the tattooed area or let anyone else besides your artist touch it. Your artist uses sterile supplies and equipment, so any other contact can lead to contamination and infection. Also, don't touch any tattoo equipment - leave that to the professionals.
Movement Guidelines
Stay still and be patient during your session. While it's fine to talk, avoid gesturing with your hands or body as this will disrupt your artist and could lead to mistakes. Remember, precision requires stillness.
Additional Pre-Care Considerations
Here are some other details that can make a significant difference in your tattoo experience:
Avoid tanning or sunburns for at least four weeks before your appointment
Skip harsh scrubs on the tattoo area in the days leading up to your session
If you need to shave the area, do it 48 hours prior, not on the day of your appointment
It's not recommended to get tattooed while pregnant or breastfeeding
For any pressing medical questions, please consult your doctor

Your Comfort is Our Priority: A Note on Numbing Cream *
We understand that everyone has different pain tolerances, and there's absolutely no judgment here. If you choose to use numbing cream, apply it 30-40 minutes before your arrival and cover it with plastic wrap. Your comfort matters to us, and we want you to have the best experience possible.
Remember, these are general recommendations, and if you have specific medical concerns, it's always best to check with your healthcare provider first.
